"Come and Find your Treasure"

Alia Thabit teaches dancers to sharpen their senses, to listen patiently to their bodies, to the music, to their fleeting impressions—to notice, to embody, to express. She teaches dancers to listen, look, and sense, to locate blocked, frozen places, to melt them with the power of breath, Oriental dance, and intuitive movement, so they can discover their own creativity, beauty, and power.

Alia, from the USA and with Lebanese and Palestinian heritage, has danced on three continents, and in six countries; presented seminars with international stars; and performed with some of our greatest living musicians. She was trained by many masters of this dance, including Ibrahim "Bobby" Farrah, Azza Sherif, Tamalyn Dallal, and Leila Farid; and studied in Lebanon, Palestine, Brazil and Egypt. She is known for her emotive performances, and specialises in training dancers in musicality, creativity, improvisation, and creating meaningful choreography. You might have her of her soon-to-be released book, "Midnight at the Crossroads: Has Belly Dance Sold its Soul?", which celebrates the secret center of Oriental music and dance.

In this whirlwind trip to Sydney, she will be offering 3 very special classes (as well as private lessons):

Effortless Improvisation

Saturday 18 February, 3-5pm, $55
Ever get feel anxious or worried when you improvise? Worry your dance is boring? It's hard to be in the moment when you don't know what to do next. But when you are in the moment, the world is golden! How to make your dance confident, intuitive, and fluid? Effortless Improv uses time-tested strategies to release your fears and bring you into the moment, so you can dance with confidence to anything, anytime, anywhere—including live music!

Suitable for Oriental or fusion dancers of all levels. Class notes included.

Movement and Meaning

Sunday 19 February, 2-4pm, $55
Does your dance ever feel stiff and sterile? When dances are composed only of steps, it's hard to feel the music or have something to say. You have to remember and rehearse when you want to feel and respond. Yet dancers of the culture all agree that the most important thing is the feeling. Learn to open yourself to the feeling from the music! Enrich your dance by imbuing it with greater meaning. Express emotion, embody a character or portray a narrative to make your dancing more than just a series of steps.

Suitable for improv or choreography, Oriental or fusion dancers, from Intermediate to Professional level.

Spontaneous Construction

Sunday 19 February, 4.30-6pm, $45
Are you tired of 8 to the left and 8 to the right? And the months of rehearsal! Wouldn't it be great if even beginner classes could do more than the same steps in unison? Spontaneous Construction uses teams and group composition strategies so that you don't even have to make the dances--your students will do it for you! Complex, exciting, easy-to-remember group dances – in about an hour. Believe it!

Suitable for structured improv and choreography, Oriental or fusion dancers. Class notes included.

This class is intended for TEACHERS only (includes troupe leaders and aspiring teachers)
